Dr. Leigh Waters hails from Brampton, Ontario. She completed her medical degree in 2015 at the University of Queensland in Brisbane Australia. After training in rural Australia, she arrived in Ottawa to complete her family medicine training at the University of Ottawa, based at Primrose Family Medicine Centre, graduating in 2019. She extended her training with a fellowship in Obesity Medicine. Through the course of the fellowship, she managed patients with obesity through the use of lifestyle changes, medications and meal replacement, in addition to pre and post-op bariatric surgical care, pediatric obesity, biopsychosocial issues related to obesity, and management of obesity related comorbidities. Through the fellowship, she took on a special interest in behaviour therapy, considered one of the pillars in obesity management, completing courses in Cognitive Behavioural therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment therapy (ACT), and motivational interviewing.

In addition, she completed research on post-bariatric surgery weight regain, and helped to develop a virtual behavioural support program early in the Covid-19 pandemic. Finally, she successfully passed certification for the Diplomate of American Board of Obesity Medicine in February 2020. Since completing her fellowship, she started independent practice at LEAF Weight Management Clinic, with a focus on behavioural activation, as well as Family Practice at Rideau Crossing Family Health Centre in Kemptville. Outside of work she enjoys active pursuits including Crossfit, golf, hiking, and travel. Her services are covered by OHIP, can offer in-person or virtual assessments and she welcomes your referrals!
