- What is the mission of the Carleton Sports Therapy Clinic
Our goal is to be an integral part of each patient’s rehabilitation team, with a focus on comprehensive care for sports injuries. Our physiotherapists, massage therapists, athletic therapists and strength and conditioning specialists to develop a collaborative approach to ensure that recovery and training work simultaneously in order to strengthen the entire body. Providing patients with education to develop total-body strength and balance which will help rehab and injury prevention.
- Are you associated with the Carleton University Sports Medicine Centre?
Yes. We work very closely with the Sport Medicine Physicians in diagnosing and care of sport injuries. If an orthopedic surgical consult is required, the on-site Sport Medicine Physicians will be able to assist in this process.
Our aim is to be leaders in post-operative orthopedic rehabilitation through innovative and evidence based practice. We are able to communicate and work with each patient’s surgeon and medical team to maximize the complete delivery of orthopedic health care. As physiotherapists we coordinate a comprehensive treatment plan through consultation with each patient’s orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialists to ensure a fully integrated recovery plan.
- What is prehabilitation?
As part of the recovery process, each patient will learn prehabilitation exercises to reduce the potential for future injury. These exercises will continue strengthening weakened areas, while improving flexibility and mobility while decreasing the risk of future injury.
- Am I an ideal candidate for physiotherapy at the Sports Therapy Clinic?
The Sports Therapy Clinic is an ideal physiotherapy provider for patients rehabilitating from orthopedic surgery and for patients who wish to return to athletic competition, a highly active lifestyle, or a physically demanding work environment. The Sports Therapy Clinic provides rehabilitation for personal and sports injuries. We DO NOT provide physiotherapy for work and auto injuries.
- Do you treat auto and work injuries?
We are NOT an accredited auto injury and work injury primary care facility. We specialize in sport injuries and all WSIB and MVA cases are referred to accredited physiotherapy clinics.
- Do you bill directly to Private Insurance (ex: Blue Cross, Great West, Standard Life)?
No. Clients using private insurance to cover the cost of treatments will pay for the treatments in full at the time of the appointment. Receipts will be issued so that you can submit them to your insurance provider for reimbursement.
- Do I need a doctor’s referral for physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy is a direct access health care service. Therefore a doctor’s referral is not required to access care. Some insurance providers may require a doctor’s referral before providing coverage. Consult your insurance provider to understand what is required by your plan. OHIP patients must have a recent doctors referral for physiotherapy assessment and treatment. Please see the information on OHIP for all conditions required for coverage.
- What is Manual and Manipulative Therapy?
Manual Therapy means “hands on” therapy. Techniques can include joint mobilizations and manipulation, soft tissue massage, myofascial release, muscle energy techniques and active release techniques.
- What is Electrotherapy?
Electrotherapy is treatments including: Ultrasound, Interferential Current (IFC), Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS), Electromuscular Stimulation (EMS), and Shockwave Therapy.
- What is Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS)?
Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) is an acupuncture needling technique that is used to treat many pain conditions caused, or aggravated by tight and painful muscle bands, in particular, the nerve supplying these muscles. When IMS treatment is applied to the spinal muscles, release of muscle tension can result in decompression of spinal nerves and a reduction in pain in the regions of the body supplied by those nerves. Detailed knowledge of anatomy is required to ensure the precise placement of the needles and maximum effectiveness of the treatment. A comprehensive assessment by a physiotherapist is required to determine if IMS is a good treatment option for you. Please speak with reception if you are interested in booking an appointment with a physiotherapist for possible IMS treatment.
- What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an ancient form of Chinese medicine involving the insertion of needles into the skin at specific points on the body to achieve a therapeutic effect.
